Head of the Department

Message from HOD

Vision loss affects millions worldwide and much of it is preventable. The Department of Optometry and Orthoptics addresses this public-health challenge by preparing clinicians who can detect, correct, and co-manage visual disorders with precision and compassion—working closely with ophthalmologists and broader care teams.

Examine. Correct. Restore Vision.

Our teaching integrates clinical reasoning with hands-on skill: comprehensive eye examination, refraction and low-vision care, contact lens practice, binocular vision and orthoptic assessment, and the safe use of modern diagnostic tools. We emphasize evidence-based decisions, patient safety, clear communication, and community outreach.

About The Department

The department focuses on the science and practice of primary eye care and orthoptics—linking anatomy, optics, physiology, and neuroscience to real clinical needs. Students learn to evaluate refractive error, ocular motility, accommodation and vergence anomalies, and functional vision problems across the lifespan, with attention to prevention and early intervention.

Clinical education takes place in purpose-built teaching clinics and simulation spaces equipped for slit-lamp biomicroscopy, retinoscopy/keratometry, perimetry, fundus evaluation, and orthoptic testing. Partnerships with hospitals and community programs enable supervised patient encounters, interdisciplinary case discussions, screening camps, and public-awareness initiatives.

Departmental Training Outcomes
Graduates will be able to: (1) diagnose, manage, and co-manage a wide range of visual and ocular conditions; (2) perform comprehensive eye examinations and orthoptic assessments using advanced diagnostic tools; (3) apply critical thinking and evidence-based practice to clinical decisions; (4) collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals to deliver integrated, patient-centered care; and (5) pursue continuing education, research, and professional engagement for sustained personal and professional growth.
